Small Engine Diagnostic Expert

Tough Mowers is looking for an expert-level small engine diagnostician to provide on-call troubleshooting support for our service department.

This is not a general mechanic or repair technician position.

We are looking for someone with extensive experience who can step into a difficult diagnostic situation, systematically identify the root cause of the problem, and give our technicians a clear direction for the repair.

The ideal candidate is the person other mechanics turn to when they can't figure out what's wrong.

What You'll Do

• Perform advanced diagnostics on outdoor power equipment
• Troubleshoot difficult or unusual problems that have already challenged our regular technicians
• Diagnose intermittent failures and problems that are difficult to duplicate
• Diagnose no-start, hard-start, performance, overheating, surging, misfire, and power-loss conditions
• Diagnose advanced fuel, ignition, compression, electrical, charging, starting, and engine-control issues
• Troubleshoot wiring, switches, relays, safety circuits, sensors, solenoids, and related electrical components
• Diagnose hydrostatic drive, PTO, transmission, drivetrain, and mechanical problems
• Use systematic testing to identify the root cause rather than replacing parts based on assumptions
• Determine what additional testing or repair is required
• Clearly document diagnostic findings so another technician can complete the repair
• Provide diagnostic direction to technicians when needed

What You Won't Be Expected to Do

This position is specifically for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
You will not be expected to perform routine maintenance, annual services, oil changes, blade changes, or normal repair work.
Your job is to find the problem. Our technicians handle the repair.

Who We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced diagnostician—not an entry-level mechanic.
The right candidate should have:

• Extensive hands-on mechanical diagnostic experience
• Strong knowledge of gasoline engines both 2-stroke and 4-stroke
• Advanced electrical troubleshooting ability
• Ability to read and troubleshoot wiring diagrams
• Experience using multimeters, compression testers, leak-down testers, spark testers, pressure/vacuum testing equipment, and other diagnostic tools
• Strong understanding of fuel, ignition, compression, electrical, charging, starting, and safety-interlock systems
• Ability to diagnose problems logically and efficiently
• Experience finding intermittent or unusual failures
• The ability to work independently

On-Call / Call-Out Position
This is an on-call diagnostic position with no regular scheduled hours.
When our technicians encounter a machine that requires expert-level troubleshooting, Tough Mowers will contact you for a diagnostic call-out. If you are available, you will come to our shop, diagnose the equipment, determine the root cause of the problem, and provide our technicians with the recommended repair direction.
You will be paid an agreed-upon call-out fee for each diagnostic visit.
This arrangement may be an excellent fit for an experienced or retired technician, mechanic, or diagnostician who wants to put years of troubleshooting experience to use without committing to a regular work schedule.
There is no expectation that you will perform the repair after diagnosing the machine. We need your expertise to solve the difficult problem; our technicians can take it from there.
